Stiction, adhesion energy, and the Casimir effect in micromechanical systems

چکیده
We measure the adhesion energy of gold using a micromachined cantilever beam. Stress and stiffness of the beam are characterized by measuring the spectrum of mechanical vibrations and the deflection due to external force. We induce stiction between the beam and a nearby surface, employing capillary forces to determine the adhesion energy g . The obtained value g50.06 J/m is a factor of 6 smaller than that predicted by idealized theory. This discrepancy may arise from surface roughness or an adsorbed layer intervening between the contacting surfaces in these mesoscopic structures.

Metastability and the Casimir effect in micromechanical systems
– Electrostatic and Casimir interactions limit the range of positional stability of electrostatically actuated or capacitively coupled mechanical devices. We investigate this range experimentally for a generic system consisting of a doubly clamped Au suspended beam, capacitively coupled to an adjacent stationary electrode. The mechanical properties of the beam, both in the linear and nonlinear ...
متن کاملModeling of the intermolecular Force-Induced Adhesion in Freestanding Nanostructures Made of Nano-beams
Among the intermolecular interactions, the Casimir and van der Waals forces are the most important forces that highly affect the behavior of nanostructures. This paper studies the effect of such forces on the adhesion of cantilever freestanding nanostructures. The nanostructures are made of a freestanding nano-beam which is suspended between two upper and lower conductive surfaces. The linear s...

Casimir effect is the attractive force which acts between two plane parallel, closely spaced, uncharged, metallic plates in vacuum. This phenomenon was predicted theoretically in 1948 and reliably investigated experimentally only in recent years. In fact, the Casimir force is similar to the familiar van der Waals force in the case of relatively large separations when the relativistic effects co...
متن کاملModeling of Stiffening and Strengthening in Nano-Layered Silicate/Epoxy (RESEARCH NOTE)
The aim of this paper is to investigate adhesion property between nano-layered filler and the polymer matrix using a combination of experimental and micromechanical models as well as the changes in yield strength and stiffness of a layered silicate-filled epoxy nanocomposite. The results indicate that addition of intercalated layered silicate particles increased Young’s modulus and yield streng...
متن کاملNUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE CASIMIR EFFECT DUE TO A SCALAR FIELD
In this paper, we study the Casimir effect of a scalar field with Dirichlet boundary condition in some certain topologies. By numerical analysis we show that Casimir energy is a shape-dependent quantity. We also obtain the phase transition in different topologies in which the Casimir force changes from attractive to repulsive or vice versa. eararqr
